Homestake - site of a Nobel Prize-winning experiment in physics

Homestake has already been the site of a Nobel Prize-winning experiment in physics.

In 2002, Dr. Ray Davis received the prize for work conducted over the course of many years. Davis proved that fusion is what provides the energy from the sun. His experiment at Homestake measured solar neutrino flux. His neutrino detection device located at the 4850 foot level of the mine was a 100,000 gallon tank filled with perchloroethylene, more commonly known as dry cleaning solvent.

Scientists hope to again use Homestake for advanced research in physics and astrophysics, geology, hydrology, microbiology, and atmospheric sciences.
